Graduation as a Landmark

Graduating from high school, college, or a vocational program is usually a key moment in someone’s life. It’s a symbol of change, progression, and moving on to new adventures. People take a moment to celebrate what they’ve achieved so far and appreciate the memories that this part of their journey has given them. It can also be a moment of acknowledgment and recognition by their elders and peers.

The graduation from Turning Winds is just such a moment. Our students are not simply discharged from the program but celebrated for their tremendous achievements.

“The program graduations are really special and they’re pretty amazing,” says chief operations officer Carl Baisden. “They provide an opportunity for the kids and the families to really have some solid closure from their treatment process.”

The residential treatment program at Turning Winds consists of a series of diagnostic, clinical, and professional services, including a comprehensive evaluation and assessment, individualized treatment planning and ongoing review, weekly individual and family therapy sessions, along with a series of group therapy experiences to support the level of care that is needed for each patient.  Furthermore, we provide complete transition/discharge planning and supervision 24 hours per day, seven days per week.  In addition to an intensive treatment program, Turning Winds also provides a hybrid scholastic model backed by a fully accredited academic program.

The Turning Winds program is quite different from what is usually available to families. “Most of our kids, a big chunk of them, have spent their entire lives in this revolving pattern, in and out of treatment,” says Baisden. “At home, they go to the therapist’s office. There are confidentiality rules, and therapists don’t necessarily share information with parents. There’s not a lot of collaboration. Our long-term residential treatment, on the other hand, allows a whole team approach and collaboration that just isn’t possible at home.”

The simple, singular focus of our treatment program is to help each student change the behaviors that are hindering their growth by teaching them to create a stable pattern of living through education, process groups, and individualized treatment planning.

Our comprehensive curriculum offerings and individualized plans provide everything your teen needs to get their education on the right track. Turning Winds offers almost any class our students will need to continue their education.

The intensive treatment provides our clients with the structure necessary to gain stability for the road ahead. Once the phase of residential treatment is completed, our clients have a strong foundation in place to begin the process of functioning without the use of negative behaviors, such as using alcohol and drugs.

Graduating from the program is a proud moment worthy of recognition. “All of their peers get opportunities to speak with them and share how they’ve impacted their lives,”  explains Carl Baisden.

“Our objective is to send them out of here feeling like a million bucks and realizing that we’re not artificially trying to build them up. We just want them to see the culmination of their work, the lives they have influenced, and the change they stimulated in other people. The friendships they’ve built, and the relationships they’ll have for the rest of their lives. That ceremony is pretty cool. I’ve been to hundreds at this point and yes, they’re all pretty amazing!”

At Turning Winds, it’s the people who make the difference—staff and clients. Over the course of two decades, we’ve built a team of some of the world’s finest academic and therapeutic professionals, all of whom share the same goal: to help teens re-engage meaningfully with their lives, families, and their futures.
