Residential Treatment Centers for Teens & Adolescent in California

Residential treatment centers for teens & adolescent in California. We here at Turning Winds are seeing a growth in California adolescents who are struggling from mental illnesses, behavioral health issues, and substance use disorders (SUDs). The reality is that mental illnesses and substance use disorders often occur together, commonly referred to as dual diagnosis, so it is crucial to treat both.

How To Find The Best Teen Treatment

Your Goal

Your goal is to treat your child’s behavioral, mental, and emotional health and ultimately to help your child heal while building a foundation that will foster a life full of purpose, happiness, and success. It is important to find a program that supports that plan and going out-of-state and attending a long-term residential program can help you achieve just that goal.

Location, Location, Location

You may think that sending your child to a treatment close to home is the best option, but in many cases this can actually hinder their care; even in a state as large and resourceful as CA. Removing your child from an environment where there are roadblocks and negative environmental factors including but not limited to negative friend/peer influences, unhealthy home relationships, unhealthy school environment, and more can have a crucial impact on their recovery and healing. We understand that sending your child away can be difficult and emotional, let alone sending out-of-state; try not to look at it as “sending away” but rather sending to the best possible program providing the care your loved one absolutely needs. Additionally, getting the child out of the home/local environment gives everyone a chance to catch their breath and address their own health concerns, family and work duties, and any other responsibilities and care which might have been ignored or neglected. Going to treatment out of state can also provide your teen the opportunity to learn new talents and skills, explore new areas and environments, and interact with new and different people both peers and professionals alike; a new and fresh perspective which can coincide with supporting their healing process.

Length of Stay

There are a variety of different treatment programs to choose from; there are outpatient program and there are inpatient programs each of which has different options. The key is identifying what level of care your loved one needs. Outpatient programs are often not enough; the child remains in the same environment with the same family situation, same friends, same school, same everything with the only difference being his/her seeing an outpatient counselor or therapist once or a few times a week for a few hours. It’s difficult for a struggling child to make the changes needed with such a low level of care. Then there are short-term programs, many of whom accept private insurance with limited out of pocket costs to the family but these programs are typically only 30-60 days at which point you get a call saying your child is ready to go home; the question you need to ask, “Is my child truly ready to go home, or is insurance just no longer paying for your services?” These programs are quite often great programs with quality care and the child can do quite well while there, but struggles upon discharge home as a 30, 60, or even 90 day short-term stay is quite often not enough for a child to fully learn, change, and heal. Then there are long-term programs, upwards of 6-12 months, where a child has ample opportunity to grow and change. These programs provide a well rounded and community type environment where the child has ample opportunity to have all areas treated including behavioral, mental, and emotional health while also working on his/her academics and learning skills and tools to best prepare them for a successful life ahead.

Insurance and Cost

You may have insurance that can cover some costs, so it is beneficial to find out what kind of coverage you have for your child and what type of care is covered. Whatever treatment you pursue, a quality treatment program will help verify insurance and advocate the best care for your child along the way. Most insurance companies will not pay for the entire length of stay for a long-term program over 90 days, but that does not mean you should limit your child’s stay. There are a variety of ways to finance long-term care for your loved one so be sure to explore all options and speak with the program for guidance and direction. Don’t let cost dictate finding the best possible placement and care for your loved one; going beyond just insurance and paying out of pocket costs for the best program now will be more cost effective in the long run and can save your child from months or even years of further struggle and suffering while also elimating the need for further treatment, the risk of legal consequences, or even the cost of your child’s life.
