How To Find The Best Teen Treatment

Your Goal

If your teen is between the ages of 13-18 and you just don’t know where to turn next, then we can help guide you in the right direction. There are many kinds of mental and behavioral health issues and often times parents are lost; they feel like their child is the only one suffering or that they are determined to figure out exactly what the problem is and fix it. If you are reading this the truth is you have likely exhausted your resources; you have explored and attempted every conversation or consequence possible and nothing has worked. It is time to stop trying to figure it out on your own; it is time to see profession help. Below are suggestions for things to consider when looking for a treatment program. You will want to find a program that treats not only mental/behavioral health and substance use, but one that addresses all areas of struggle in your child’s life; you want a program that treats the whole person and can equip your loved one with the self-worth and skills and tools to be successful.

Location, Location, Location

Location is a crucial factor when choosing a treatment program for your child. It is easy to stay local but we urge you not to limit yourself based solely on proximity to home and convenience. We have worked with thousands of kids from all over the US and even internationally and can testify to the fact that getting away from the home and negative environment and influences is perhaps just as critical as the quality of the program itself. You are probably concerned about your teen’s choice of friends and peer group; you’re wondering what he/she is doing when out; you’ve noticed your child’s grades are dropping and perhaps attendance is falling; your home is often filled with arguing, shouting, and door slamming or furniture throwing. The truth is the home, school, and neighborhood has become unhealthy and distractive and your child needs to be separated lest risk falling further into the hole they are in. Away from the negative influences, the distractions, the arguing, and the noise your child can rediscover themselves and focus on accepting help and making the changes needed as they move forward in their personal healing journey. Your teen has been struggling far too long and they deserve the opportunity to heal their mind, body, and spirit.

Length of Stay

Now that we have gone over just a few of the many benefits of sending your teen to a treatment program out-of-state, we must now discuss length of stay which is just as equally important to consider if you want success for your child. There are outpatient programs and 30, 60, maybe even 90 day treatment plans that are fanatics for those who are stepping down or transitioning from a residential long-term care program, but should not be your first line of defense. Consider again what has been going on at home and at school, amongst family and friends and ask yourself honestly with all these things in mind if a 30, 60, or even 90 day program is enough for your child to not only get the help they need, but make the changes necessary and develop the skills and abilities to start living a healthier way of life. It is unrealistic to think that years of struggle and turmoil can turn around in a few short months. Your child needs time, your child needs a long-term program of upwards of 3, 6, 9, or even 12 months that offers a long-term plan and approach to meet your child’s needs and can reverse the course down which your loved one has been heading. Keep in mind too that your child’s academics are equally important and likely have been suffering because of these other issues. Academic success helps build self-worth and affords a child greater opportunity and success in the future. Your child may need to get his/her grades and GPA up, perhaps even they are a semester or full year or two behind academically. Some long-term programs offer academic schooling along with therapeutic care so your child can get back on track academically and be better prepared for a successful future after completion of treatment.

Insurance and Cost

We understand that cost can be an uncomfortable and perhaps frustrating topic, but do not let that deter you from finding the best help for your loved one. With the correct information, you will be able to make the best decision for your teen’s care. Many treatment programs accept health insurance coverage to offset cost of care. If you have health insurance coverage be sure to inquire as to what, if any coverage you have. If you don’t have health insurance, ask about the private pay rate. A quality treatment program should guide you through the insurance and financial maze while advocating for your family and your child so you have the facts to make the best possible decision. We strongly urge you not to let financing be the primary determining factor in the program you choose. It needs to be considered, but many families are surprised when they learn of different ways to help make the best care more affordable and manageable. Looking for alternative ways to help support for your child’s treatment will be more cost effective in the long run; drastically reducing the possibility of relapse and repeated treatment stays not to mention further emotional, medical, and/or legal consequences. Remember, this is your child’s life we are talking about; don’t take the easiest, shortest, most inexpensive way out.
