Turning Winds Celebrates 20 Years of Helping Teens Grow

Twenty years ago, Turning Winds began with the simple desire to help young lives see a new path. In two decades, the program has matured into a sophisticated program based in Troy, Montana, that blends the benefits of a wilderness program, a residential treatment center, and a boarding school.

Each of these three elements helps teens overcome their problems and rebuild their lives. We use the power of nature, academic support, and both group and individual therapy in a strength-based program that typically spans 12 months—enough time for teens to achieve real change, and practice what they’ve learned.

Turning Knowledge into Purpose

Turning Winds is a family-run residential treatment center combined with a fully accredited academic program specializing in working with youth who are struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues. We believe the success of our teenage clients is based on a combination of therapeutic and educational approaches that provide the best possible outcomes for each patient we treat in our program.

“The simple, singular focus of our treatment program is to help each student improve their self-image and their self-confidence and change the behaviors that have been hindering their growth by teaching them to create stable patterns of living through education, process groups, and individualized treatment planning,” says Turning Winds CEO Owen Baisden.

The therapeutic approaches—many particular to the Turning Winds boarding school
environment—include character education, health, and wellness of the body and mind, outdoor therapeutic experiential education, therapeutic and academic success, along with continuously improving each vital pillar of our world-class treatment center through measuring outcomes in each area. Together, these constitute five pillars of change.

Our therapists and educators have created an environment for success, filling young minds with understanding and clarity. Turning Winds provides experiences like our international service trips that convert participation into personal growth.

“I got into this business with my son, John Jr, really out of an incentive to be able to change people’s lives,” says Turning Winds Founder John Baisden.

Young people like Brad who learned that “I am much smarter than I believed myself to be. I have learned great study habits. I have learned in order to accomplish something you have to work. I have taught myself not to give up.”

At Turning Winds, it’s the people who make the difference—staff, and patients. Over the course of two decades, we’ve built a team of some of the world’s finest academic, therapeutic, and medical professionals, all of whom share the same goal: to help teens re-engage meaningfully with their lives, families, and their futures.
