28% Report Low Well-Being

32% Report Hopelessness

22% Report Presence of Emotional Problems

42% Report Low Life Satisfaction

The Impact of Teen Mental Health and well-being among Teens in Military-Connected Families

According to a study conducted by Mahar AL et al. it was noted that youth who had a connection to the military reported a significant negative difference from their peers when it came to teen mental health.

Teens in military-connected families were 28% more likely to report low well-being, 32% more likely to report hopelessness, 22% more likely to report the presence of emotional problems and 42% more likely to report low life satisfaction.

Furthermore, it was discovered that the link between military connections, low well-being, and low life satisfaction was more pronounced in younger students (Grades 6—8) compared to those in Grades 9—10.  Specifically, military-connected students in Grades 6—8 were 42% more likely to report low well-being than their non-military-connected peers, whereas this likelihood was 15% for those in Grades 9—10. The correlation between military connections and other mental health outcomes was generally similar across both groups (Grades 6—8 and Grades 9—10). Additionally, the associations between military connections and negative mental health were comparable in both boys and girls.
