Group Homes in Virginia
As a premier therapeutic center for struggling youth from Virginia, Turning Winds offers valued guidance to teens struggling with bipolar disorder, divorce reaction, and/or defiance.
While the greatest strides in the areas of therapy, treatment, and long-term transformation are known to be made in therapeutic group homes for adolescents, there can be some confusion as to what a group home is. In the past, group homes in Virginia were associated primarily with individuals may have had psychiatric disorders or disabilities, or were referred to as "shelters" for those who were displaced for various reasons. In essence, they were a form of modified assisted living when individuals could not wholly care for themselves. In present times, however, this is not the case.
The term group home has grown to encompass a broader spectrum of assisted living. It now includes therapeutic centers and treatment facilities that offer individualized change plans for teen boys and girls who struggle with opiate abuse/addiction, alcohol dependence, and various co-occurring dilemmas, with an additional focus on aspects of aftercare to help at-risk adolescents with healing, and find balance and prepare themselves for the real world.
While attending our group home, clients will not only receive the specific therapeutics they need to achieve sobriety and transformation, but they will also be taught the life skills they need to strengthen their character and facilitate long-term success in their recovery. Turning Winds' Group Home takes great care in the development of treatment and therapy methods, and together with the our accredited, premier academic curriculum, can help get the lives of adolescents from Virginia back on track.

Girls Group Home
While a girls group home is a great option when looking for treatment for struggling youth in Virginia, but when it comes to comprehensive, successful results, co-ed facilities are the preferred choice. Throughout the therapeutics process, exposure to one’s peers on a day to day basis can re-enforce any progress made in therapy, and also offers a healthy, supportive environment for adolescents to learn to interact with one another in a positive manner.
While group homes do aid in the change process by giving a safe place for teen boys and girls to get help for their alcohol dependence, opiate abuse/addiction or mental health problems, co-ed facilities in particular are more advantageous when it comes to academics and personal development.
Boys Group Home
Recent research has shown that even as young as elementary school, children benefit from a co-ed learning environment – and these benefits are magnified when it comes to teen boys and girls. In fact, private or independent facilities that provide a co-ed program not only achieve better academic results, but their social, critical thinking, and communication skills as bolstered as well. Additionally, adolescents of both sexes can learn from each other socially, and the diversity experienced not only better reflects society, but it helps those in recovery to avoid developing biases toward gender stereotyping.
At Turning Winds, we know treatment is not limited to opiate abuse/addiction or mental health dilemmas alone. Adolescence is a difficult time, and ensuring our clients are strong and well-prepared to assimilate successfully into the real world is part of our goal. We at Turning Winds know that a co-ed group home will not only help fortify the foundation of a adolescent’s life in sobriety, but it will also build their character and help them with learning the skills they will need for a successful future.
Mental Health Group Homes
At-risk adolescents from Virginia, struggling with alcohol dependence and opiate abuse/addiction are rarely free of additional co-occurring dilemmas or disorders. Whether it is defiance, behavioral problems, depression, or mental health troubles of any kind, treating one issue without treating the other inevitably hinders transformation. We at Turning Winds are devoted to rehabilitating the whole person. Not only do we customize therapy according to an individual adolescent’s needs, but we also offer the kind of academic curriculum and remedial supervision options necessary for a full and complete change.
Restoration is key when it comes to healing, and some of the therapeutic treatments given at our group home include basing our practices within the cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) methodology. Implementing the use of CBT in treatment still allows for counselors to utilize varying theoretical schools of thought for individualized therapeutics plans (when necessary), however at our core, we employ a humanistic - relationship-based Rogerian approach. This type of approach focuses on a person-centered mindset, which is why Turning Winds also gives outdoor adventure therapy experiences to help re-focus at-risk teen boys and girls and help them regain their self-confidence.
When it comes to academics, our clients excel far and above conventional expectations. On average, each client at Turning Winds will complete two years of schools during their 12-month stay and maintain a 3.5 GPA. It is also not uncommon for clients to raise their GPA by a full letter grade during this same period, and we believe it is our dedication to smaller class sizes and our individualized, comprehensive learning model that offers such distinguished results.
