How To Find The Best Teen Treatment

Your Goal

Many parents struggle with questions like “Where do I begin?” Or “How does this all work?” If you feel overwhelmed, stressed, and uncertain where to turn you are not alone. There are millions of families out there going through exactly what you are going through and if you take it a step at a time, you will be able to figure out the best plan for your teen. First things first, you want to find help for your teen long-term. Let’s take a look at 3 simple steps to help you get there:

  1. Reach out to a supportive family member or friend. Let them know what is going on so you can have extra strength and support to get you through this process.
  2. Find out what your insurance covers. If you do not have insurance or have a limited policy that does not cover mental health and cannot afford the coverage of care, click here.
  3. Research some teen rehab programs and don’t be afraid to go out-of-state if needed. If you are unsure how to or just feel so overwhelmed and you can’t take it on alone, Turning Winds is happy to help. Just call us at 800-845-1380 and we will guide you through the process.

Location, Location, Location

Location is more important than you may think. Keeping your child close to home can make you feel like you are more in control and can process this journey better, but we encourage parents to really think outside the box when it comes to the treatment of their teen. We here at Turning Winds have watched hundreds of miracles; children and families from all over the United States, and even internationally, who came through treatment here. One of the amazing benefits of going out-of-state is the removal of an unhealthy environment, unhealthy relationships, and a reduced risk of a teen running away or communicating with negative peer influences. Another advantage of going to a new location away from home is that your teen will have the opportunity to discover new hobbies, talents, and skills that they may not have otherwise learned. When choosing a location, you want to think about how this place will benefit your teens education, talents, imagination, and overall growth and self-esteem. No matter where you send your child, it should provide them with life-changing perspective on their life and future.

Length of Stay

Now that we have gone over the benefit of attending an out-of-state treatment program, let’s take a look at length of stay and how important this is to your teen’s overall recovery and long-term success. If you want your child to have a life-changing experience for the better, than a short term 30 some odd day program in many cases will not cut it. It really is not enough time to change when you consider how long your loved one has been struggling and the challenges they are facing to heal. We highly recommend a program that offers at minimum 90 days to upwards of 9-12 months. We understand that this seems like an eternity, but we are talking about the health and well-being of your child and they deserve the opportunity and time to fully heal, recover, and build a strong foundation for success and happiness long after they leave treatment. Turning Winds has been treating teens since 2002 and from our experience it is crucial not to let insurance and funds dictate the length of stay; obviously insurance and cost are a factor, but don’t let that deter you from choosing the possible care. Instead, the length of stay should be determined on an individual, case by case basis with each child and measured by how the child is responding and progressing as they move through the program.

Insurance and Cost

If you have insurance it can help with cost for care. A frustration we commonly see among parents is when the insurance company will only cover a certain amount of time, typically between 0-90 days and we completely understand. This is why we guide family’s through the insurance process while also helping them navigate ways to pay for the remainder of treatment. We understand financial fears can play a role in deciding on where to send your child, but remember that this is their health and well-being and deserves some serious thought and commitment. This is an investment into your teen’s future and they are absolutely deserve the best care so they might live a life full of purpose, hope, and joy.
