Turning Winds Alaska Connections

Alaska has seen an increase in teen mental health problems and many treatment programs either do not offer the kind of care that is needed or there are not enough centers and staff to accommodate the increase of those who do need help. We have been treating mental and behavioral health issues for teens since 2002 and want to make sure you are guided in the best direction to help your loved one.

Turning Winds Alaska Connections

Your Goal

Your goal is to find the best care before it becomes a life-long battle. We have found that long-term residential care that focuses on building self-esteem, encourages a positive self-image, assists in the recovery of studies, and provides private and group therapeutic sessions, has shown to help these teens recover from any underlying issues that have been holding them back from a successful recovery long-term.

Location, Location, Location

Location is a huge part of the process and many parents might think that keeping their kid close to home is the best option, but we have found otherwise. Turning Winds has witnessed so many miracles since opening our doors in the beautiful mountains of Montana in 2002. We understand for those living in Alaska that MT can seem a long ways from home, but attending an out-of-state adolescent long-term residential treatment program could be the very thing that your child needs to alter their destructive path. A new environment offers fresh perspective, the discovery of new skills and talents, and the chance to separate from any negative people or influences that have been holding them back from being the best version of themselves. Your teen deserves the chance to heal, explore, learn, grow, and experience life in a healthy and positive way. Whether they attend a treatment center like Turning Winds or another teen program that provides in-depth care, we encourage you to take chance and explore other options outside your immediate area.

Length of Stay

Have you ever tried to change a habit in just a month and then stick to it? Imagine how difficult that would be for your child who is trying to not only change bad habits, but catch up in their studies, work through unresolved mental and behavioral health issues, and build a solid foundation so that they can experience living life in a whole new way. It would be nearly impossible and really unfair to do this to a kid who is seriously suffering. They may even believe that they have to be “fixed” in just 30 days and if they are not, they have failed themselves and others. That is a huge weight to carry and so this is why we strongly suggest a program that can go anywhere from 3 months to a year. We encourage you to look at this as an investment into your child’s life for today and tomorrow. They deserve a real chance at long-term recovery and the length of stay could be the very thing that makes it or breaks it.

Insurance and Cost

Untreated mental and behavioral health issues have robbed your child and your family of happiness, good health, and joy. We want to help you get that back and in order to do so you will have figure out how you are going to pay for treatment. Turning Winds understands this is can be an obstacle and may prevent many families from getting the best possible care, so we want to help guide you through this process. First you will want to know what kind of insurance you have and what kind of programs they will cover, then you will want to figure out which program you would like to attend and have them look into what your insurance covers. We know this can feel overwhelming, so please feel free to contact us so we can help you navigate your coverage and point you in the best direction. You are not alone and you don’t have to navigate this alone either. Call us now at 800-845-1380 to see how we can help you.

Equine Therapy – Healing With Horses

Today we got to experience the healing power of the horse. The students have been learning to properly lead, groom and care for these animals. Much like their teenage handlers, horses can be stubborn and reluctant to follow orders. As our students learn to get along and work with the horses they will gain emotional awareness, empathy, flexibility, self-control, assertiveness and problem-solving skills. Horses mirror the behavior of their handlers giving students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of their own emotions and body language, which helps them to have better interpersonal relationships and impulse control.

TWAI Girls Having the Glacier Park Experience

Some of our girls went on a recent excursion to Glacier National Park. The 3 hour drive to the park was filled with laughter and loud singing as they took turns playing DJ with their favorite music. Big horn sheep came out to greet them on Going-To-The-Sun Road and the aspen and larch trees were adorned in their fall yellow leaves. Everyone was truly amazed at how beautiful everything was while driving through West Glacier to their trailhead destination in Logan Pass. The round trip hike to Hidden Lake Overlook is 2.7 miles with a peak trail elevation of 7152 feet. The girls got to joke around, relax and enjoy the great Montana wilderness. After the long day they capped the trip off with burritos for dinner in Kalispell.
