A healthy client culture—where teens feel safe, supported, and able to engage in their treatment—is determined by the staff culture. A culture of service is one where the staff feel valued, respected, and connected—it empowers them to work more effectively and with greater compassion.

Understanding teen mental health can feel overwhelming. We’ve compiled essential terminology, FAQs, and helpful links to support you.
When parents are searching for help for a teen struggling with mental health—whether they’re dealing with depression, self-harming behaviors, or high anxiety—they want assurances that their child will be cared for in a safe, stable, and compassionate environment.
At Turning Winds, a leading teen mental health residential treatment center for teenagers (also referred to as a therapeutic boarding school or behavioral health treatment facility), we believe a strong team culture is the foundation for creating a safe space where adolescents can heal and thrive.
By prioritizing teamwork and a culture of service, we support our staff and create a therapeutic environment designed to profoundly impact the daily lives of adolescents ages 13-17. As a result, teens experiencing mental health symptoms that require a higher level of care than what is offered by short-term or outpatient programs find the support they need.

A parent who sends their child to an in-patient treatment program wants to feel confident and trust that their treatment choice will provide the best outcome. Moreover, there’s an unspoken expectation that the staff will treat their teen with compassion and that they are consistent.
A hope that the environment is drama-free and that everyone in the treatment team is focused on providing their teenager with the best teen care. There’s an unspoken expectation that everyone shares one common goal, and that is to above all, help the resident students learn to overcome their emotional, behavioral or mental health issues.
At the end of the day, it comes down to trust. You’re entrusting your teen to these professionals, hoping they’ll provide treatment and genuine care. Every parent expects and hopes their teen is treated with kindness, finds encouragement and feels respected. After all, all these are fundamental building blocks for treatment and healing.
We know that having a cohesive team helps support one another and significantly influences the treatment center’s atmosphere, directly impacting the teens we care for. Teens dealing with anxiety, depression, or other challenges feel more secure when they observe positive interactions among the adults around them. Consequently, this sense of safety allows them to focus on their treatment and build the skills they need to overcome life’s challenges.
Carl Baisden, our COO, explains it best:
“When the people at the top of a system are united, it creates safety, predictability, and trust for everyone within it. That unity directly impacts the outcomes for the teens we serve.”
When dealing with mental health issues such as teen depression, self-harm, or severe anxiety, maintaining predictability and stability is essential. At Turning Winds, the strong bonds among staff foster a structured, nurturing and supportive healing environment that benefits teens in tangible ways like:
Parents often wonder, “How will residential treatment improve my teen’s daily life?” The answer lies in evidence-based practices for mental health treatment and the supportive culture surrounding those therapies. At Turning Winds, the staff culture ensures that every moment—whether in therapy, during academic support, or even at mealtime—contributes to a teen’s path to healing.
One of our guiding principles is recognizing the parallels between family systems and team culture.
Much like how a family thrives on strong bonds between parents to provide children with stability, our team believes that solid relationships among staff lay the groundwork for a safe environment for teens.
After 20 years of working with struggling teens, we understand that when leadership and staff work as a cohesive unit, the potential for unhealthy patterns—such as triangulation or manipulation—that teens often exhibit are reduced. Instead, the treatment environment becomes one of consistency and support, where teens in our care can develop new, healthier ways of interacting with adults and with their peers.

At Turning Winds, a culture of service isn’t just an appealing notion—it’s a fundamental way of life. When a team member recently faced a medical crisis, her colleagues donated their paid time off to ensure she could take the time she needed to recover.
This level of support among co-workers is not the result of a policy. It is the result of our values and culture in action. Experience has taught us that when the staff feel supported and cared for, they offer that same compassion to the teens in their care.
A culture of service is a mindset that creates an environment conducive to healing, where teens feel safe to explore their emotions, engage in therapy, and take meaningful steps to make positive changes and learn new ways of coping with their emotions. Ultimately, this mindset and culture encourages trust in treatment.

We witness the effects of our culture and its impact daily. The teens who arrive feeling anxious, withdrawn, and often resistant to treatment often begin to trust the process as they see our staff working together and treating each other and our residents with kindness and respect.
The impact is measurable, and the benefits are evident as our students:
These results are not by chance; they result from a coordinated team effort, prioritizing the well-being of the staff and the teenagers in our care.

The culture of the staff at a residential treatment center for teenagers is an essential element in helping teens overcome challenges like depression, self-harm, and high anxiety. Kevin and Carl discuss how our collaborative approach and culture help transform the lives of teenagers in treatment, one step at a time.
Kevin Zundl – Introduces the Topic and Guest
Hi, I’m Kevin Zundl, and welcome to the Turning Winds Podcast. Turning Winds is a residential treatment center for teenagers offering comprehensive care and academic support for teens needing clinical help.
Today, I’m joined by Carl Baisden for another meaningful conversation. I always walk away with something valuable from these talks, and I hope our listeners do, too.
A recurring theme in my discussions with the staff at Turning Winds is the team’s strength. There’s a unique dynamic here—trust, reliance, and collaboration. So, Carl, how does Turning Winds foster such a strong and cohesive team culture?
It starts with mutual respect and connection. At Turning Winds, we view our team like a family. Just as in a healthy family system, unity at the top creates safety and predictability for everyone. When staff are united and supportive, it directly impacts the environment we create for teens, reducing opportunities for manipulation and unhealthy behaviors.
We’ve intentionally built a culture where staff genuinely care for one another. Recently, a teammate undergoing medical treatment received donated PTO from her colleagues so she could focus on her recovery stress-free. This kind of support isn’t dictated by policy—it reflects our team’s bond and commitment.
This culture translates into our care as a residential treatment center for teenagers. When staff feel supported and connected, we’re better equipped to create the safe, consistent environment teens need for healing. If staff culture is strong, client outcomes improve—it’s that simple.
“That’s inspiring, Carl. It’s amazing what can be built on a strong foundation like this.” ~ Kevin Zundl

A unified and professional team forms the foundation of a safe, predictable, and effective in-patient treatment environment. At Turning Winds, our commitment to collaboration and shared goals ensures that teenagers in our care receive consistent, compassionate care, fostering a sense of security and trust essential for their healing journey.
We believe that supporting our staff creates a ripple effect that directly benefits the teens in our care. When leadership prioritizes the well-being of the team, it cultivates a culture of service rooted in empathy and respect. This culture extends to how we treat every teen, ensuring they feel valued, understood, and supported as they work toward recovery.
Our staff often describe each other as family, a reflection of the deep connections we’ve cultivated within our team. This sense of unity extends to our residents, who frequently describe the environment not as clinical or sterile but as “home-like.” It feels more like a supportive group home and a close-knit community—Turning Winds is a safe, welcoming space where healing and growth can flourish.

Evidence-based practices (EBPs) are treatments or interventions that are supported by rigorous scientific research and proven to be effective in achieving desired outcomes. These practices use empirical evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to guide decisions. For more information, visit Wikipedia’s page on Evidence-Based Practice.
Refers to a program structure that integrates multiple therapeutic and academic approaches to provide holistic care.
A therapeutic approach that focuses on family dynamics and their role in a teen’s development and well-being.
We prioritize compassion in our service-oriented culture. Every staff member is dedicated to helping teens, many of whom have attended therapeutic programs themselves and truly understand what a teen experiences upon arrival and throughout their healing journey. Our professional team ensures that each teen in our care feels valued and understood.
Our dedicated staff members employ an array of positive reinforcement techniques to motivate and inspire our teens. Through encouragement and support, we help them learn and practice new skills while engaging in thoughtfully organized therapeutic experiences and enriching educational programs.
Trained in effective de-escalation methods, our team excels at fostering a calm and productive atmosphere. They skillfully manage confrontations, using their expertise to diffuse tense situations, resolve conflicts amicably, and create a safe space for all participants.
Character education holds a vital place within our comprehensive program. Students take part in a variety of interactive activities designed to cultivate essential skills such as conflict resolution, self-respect, and respect for others. They also learn appropriate social interactions, fostering personal growth and building a strong foundation for future relationships.
At Turning Winds, we recognize that each teen comes to us with their unique challenges, experiences, and needs. While we treat all our students equally, we do not adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to care.
Each teen receives an individualized treatment plan tailored to their specific circumstances and emotional needs, including their unique dietary requirements.
For instance, a teen struggling with depression and self-harm will participate in a program that focuses on addressing underlying issues such as trauma, emotional regulation, or self-esteem.
Conversely, a teen referred to us for conduct-related challenges, such as vandalism or oppositional behavior, will receive support designed to help them understand the consequences of their actions, develop accountability, and build healthy coping strategies.
Our team prioritizes what matters most for each student, ensuring their journey is profoundly personal and focused on long-term growth and success. This individualized approach is one of the reasons parents trust Turning Winds to make a meaningful difference in their child’s life.
