Teen Treatment Covered by Healthcare Insurance New Hampshire NH

Adolescent Treatment Programs in New Hampshire Accepting Insurance

Finding an adolescent mental or behavioral treatment provider in New Hampshire that accepts healthcare insurance is not an easy task. Depending on the particular adolescent treatment program and the specific benefits covered by an insurance plan, the treatment program may be able to work with your insurance provider, but without a consultation it is never a guarantee.

If you've found a treatment program in New Hampshire you like, its worth your time and energy to find out if they accept your insurance plan. Your insurance just might pay for some or all of the treatment costs your child will incur. But, you won't know until you ask.

We recommend that you contact your insurance company, either online or over the phone, and ask about the coverage and benefits offered under your plan. Or, consider choosing a treatment facility in New Hampshire and ask them to contact your insurer for you, as they might be able to get you answers faster.

Mental & Behavioral Health Coverage in New Hampshire

Before the Affordable Care Act of 2018, many insurance companies did not provide comprehensive mental health care as a core benefit.  However, because of Obamacare and subsequent healthcare laws (mental health parity laws), all insurers must provide the same level of care for mental health issues as they do for any other type of coverage. Meaning, health insurance companies must provide the same level of coverage for mental health as they do physical health.

The mental health parity laws states that insurers are required to cover mental and behavioral health issues (including substance-use disorders) in the same way they cover physical health issues. The parity law applies to employer health plans, coverages bought through the marketplace (Affordable Care Act), CHIP, and most Medicaid-funded programs.

Obamacare mandates that insurance companies offer at least the bare minimum coverage for substance abuse, addiction, and mental health issues (Unfortunately, these mandates only apply to the insurance coverage bought through the marketplace, and therefore not all folks are guaranteed a decent level of mental health coverage).

Private health insurance plans in New Hampshire are not required to cover mental health or behavioral health treatment, but most do anyway. They offer coverage for addiction and substance abuse treatment because they might want to sell their plan on the government "marketplace," and many folks looking to buy private health insurance want mental and behavioral health covered.

Most insurance policies consider "drug rehab coverage" and/or "addiction treatment services" as universal covered benefits. Meaning, treatment is provided to everyone diagnosed with an addiction regardless of the type of addiction, age or gender of the addict, or what caused the addiction in the first place. If mental health and addiction treatment is covered by your insurer's plan, then you get that benefit no matter what kind of substance abuse or drug rehab service is needed.

Know The Details of Your Insurance Plan - Mental & Behavioral Health Benefits in New Hampshire

Before attempting to admit or enroll your troubled teen into a mental or behavioral health treatment program in New Hampshire be sure to find out if the program works with your insurance company. As a matter of fact, before you start looking for treatment for your child, know everything there is about your coverage as it pertains to mental health, behavioral health, and substance abuse treatment. Go so far as to know coverage, benefits, provider restrictions, the cost of co-payments, and everything you are required to pay because your insurance company in New Hampshire does not cover.

Even though "residential treatment" may not be covered by your insurance, you might be able to use your IOP and/or PHP insurance benefits to help pay for a large portion of the cost of a residential treatment center in New Hampshire. The best RTC's work with insurance companies as "out-of-network providers," which allows for some therapeutic services to be paid by the insurance company.  For example, many insurance plans cover a wide array of mental health treatment provided by Residential Treatment Centers in New Hampshire, such as Intensive Outpatient treatment, Intensive Inpatient treatment, Partial Hospitalization treatment, as well as Individual and Group Therapy.

In addition, treatment programs in New Hampshire providing diagnostic assessments by licensed mental health practitioners are able to submit the bills to insurance companies on behalf of their client. Since diagnostic services are covered by most insurance plans, parents of teens receiving treatment in New Hampshire-based residential treatment centers can get assessments, tests, and diagnostic services paid for, thus lowering the overall cost of treatment.
