The
orientation phase of Turning Winds program is approximately
six weeks in length. During this phase, adolescents are evaluated
for academics, mental stability and individual needs. They
participate in group and individual counseling sessions, journal
writing, physical training, service projects and building projects.
They are expected to complete daily chores and are given a
structured environment in which they can begin to gain a sense
of self-worth and trust. Also, during this phase children begin
academics and set goals for their future.
We offer a dynamic alternative to wilderness camps by integrating
the great outdoors with residential care. As a residential
facility, we provide many of the necessities that most outdoor
programs cannot, such as daily showers, well balanced meals,
sleeping indoors and a familiar home environment.
At the same time, we understand the impact that the outdoors can offer in facilitating
growth. Thus, we spend at least one day per week undertaking an outdoor field
trip which may include events such as hiking, snowshoeing, canoeing, swimming,
etc. Further, the completion of each orientation phase includes a ten (10) day
backpacking trip.
